The Department of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a position as Professor in political ecology. The Professor will develop, manage and participate in existing research projects and will develop the field of political ecology in the research group, Global Development.

The Professor will also develop and teach courses on environment and development in the Global South, including themes such as political ecology, environmental justice, participatory planning, livelihoods, etc.

Applicants must have a PhD degree relevant for the field of political ecology such as anthropology, development studies, geography, natural resource governance, political science and resource economics, and must have worked with research in relevant fields.

Applicants will be assessed based on their qualifications within the following areas:

  • Documented ability to collect and analyse information about access to resources and livelihoods
  • Documented experience in research on the politics of natural resource governance
  • Experience in analysing data on the role of environmental resources in rural household welfare to assess household choice of participation in specific livelihood strategies
  • Experience from inter-disciplinary fieldwork and project management in different geographical locations.
  • Documented solid track record in publication at an international level, within the topical areas of the position
  • Documented successful supervision of PhD candidates
  • Proven ability to raise project funding from external sources and the management of such projects

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for professors is required.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented qualifications in developing courses and teaching. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

The Professor will be working in the reserach group, Global Development, which engages in inter-disciplinary research on economic, political, environmental, and institutional dynamics in developing countries. Research areas include issues of livelihoods, small-scale industry, trade, and labour; of climate change mitigation and adaptation; of forest and natural resource management; of resource conflicts and land acquisition; and of governance, state formation, and corruption.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Commencing salary is currently DKK 589,601 including annual supplement (+ pension DKK 100,822).

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
